RUN-N-LITES
General Information
& Application Guide

RUN-N-LITES conversion kits are designed to add running lights to the stock BMW motorcycle turn signal housings. The stock arrangement has a single element bulb in each turn signal housing, there are no running (marker) lights on either the front or the rear of the stock BMW motorcycle. These kits are designed to install without cutting or splicing wires. The light bulbs used are standard automotive bulbs which are readily available. Bulb Specifications have been compiled for your convenience.

Our intention is to use easy to find components in all of our products, in that way simplifying maintenance in the field. The bulbs used are standard automotive bulbs; no odd-ball, hard-to-find items. Any gas station, auto supply or large retail outlet (K-Mart, Wal-Mart, Sears, PEP Boys...etc) will stock these light bulbs.

Most RUN-N-LITES turn signal conversion kits utilize #1157 bulbs. This is the standard, dual element, American automobile tail light bulb. This bulb contains both a low intensity element and a high intensity element. The low intensity element is the running or marker light, which is ON all the time. The high intensity element is the flashing, turn signal element, which is ON intermittently. The stock BMW single element turn signal bulb and socket are replaced with the #1157 bulb which handles both running (marker) and turn signal functions.

The exception to this is the TYPE-3 & TYPE-14 RUN-N-LITES kit (K-100/1100 RS & K-1200 RS respectively). These kits use a #168 single element, low intensity light bulb. This bulb is used in side marker light applications on GM & Ford automobiles. In our application the bulb is mounted inside the front turn signal housing adjacent to the stock, single element, turn signal bulb. The #168 bulb handles the running (marker) light duties only, while the original turn signal bulb continues to handle the turn signal duties.

Note for 2002 and newer models with EVO ABS system

These models have a monitoring system for the function of the tail light bulb - measuring current flow . In the event of a tail light malfunction, the new system will recognize this and automatically send a lower voltage current to the brake light bulb, to make it look as a tail light, to ensure that the bike is illuminated at the rear.

The power for the RUN-N-LITE and LITE BUDDY or LITE BLAZER system is taken off the tail light bulb. Because of this, there is always a current flowing, and subsequently the monitoring and automatic switch-over will not work anymore. But the bike is not without light at the tail, the RUN-N-LITES, LITE BUDDYS or LITE BLAZER are on.

If you do not want to give up the monitoring system, you will have to get the power for the accessory light from another 12V source, which is switched with the ignition key.
